Frank Guastella, M.D.

Comprehensive Ophthalmologist

Frank Guastella, M.D. was the founder of Southwest Ophthalmology which merged with Arbor Centers for EyeCare in 2002.  Dr. Guastella believes that the most important thing in medicine is being kind, compassionate and doing the right thing for the patient.  His many mentors in life, including the late Wendell Kapustiak, M.D. (father of Arbor physician James Kapustiak, M.D.) taught him the importance of hard-work and dedication to his patients.

Dr. Guastella began his medical career in family practice, where for years he delivered babies and cared for all of the medical needs of his patients.  He was then inducted into the United States Army as a Medical Officer during the Vietnam War.  Fascinated by the meticulous nature of eye surgery, following his service, he joined the University of Illinois Eye and Ear Infirmary as a resident in ophthalmology.  At the same time, he met Dr. Wendell Kapustiak and worked at Southwest Ophthalmology.

Dr. Guastella has been a leader in the ophthalmology, having been the first surgeon to implant an intraocular lens during cataract surgery at Holy Cross Hospital.  Dr. Guastella served as the founder and former Chairman of the Department of Ophthalmology at Holy Cross Hospital.  He also served as Chairman and Founder of the Department of Ophthalmology at Christ Hospital Medical Center.
